Friendship and Medical Trips

Reflections from the Field: Healing and Community in Malawi – by Meg Sullivan

Megan Sullivan recently traveled to Malawi, Africa, with VIP on a Medical Trip. Hear about her experience leading a team and providing critical healthcare to those in need.

In many ways, I feel called to return to Malawi as soon as I leave. The deep sense of purpose and the profound impact on patients and families draw me back each year. Leading this recent medical trip was a perfect example of that fulfillment, offering a rewarding opportunity to support our team in delivering critical care. While each trip brings its own set of challenges, witnessing the resilience, healing and hope within the communities we serve made this year’s medical trip experience especially meaningful.

I believe the greatest strength of this team was the individuals themselves. Each person brought talents and experiences that complemented one another—compassion, healing, perseverance, faith, and a genuine desire to serve others. They were the gifts God provided to make this work possible.

Building Community & Trust Across Cultures

As a leader, one of the most rewarding aspects of serving on these medical missions is witnessing the rapid development of teamwork and collaboration in a challenging, cross-cultural environment. In many healthcare settings, it can take years for a medical team to build high-performing trust and efficiency, even when sharing the same language and culture. Seeing that process unfold in just hours or days across different countries, languages, and cultures is truly incredible.

For instance during one of our remote clinic days, a patient arrived actively seizing. The team sprang into action without hesitation. They quickly established IV access, obtained blood work, administered medication, and collaborated on critical medical decisions. Despite the complexity and urgency of these situations, the team members come together seamlessly to provide life-saving care. Witnessing that level of dedication was both inspiring and humbling. It served as a powerful reminder of why I feel so grateful to serve alongside such compassionate talent.

Investing in Malawi’s Healthcare Future

Ultimately, this trip is about making a lasting difference. See why everyone should take a trip like this. We jump in and provide care where it is needed most and we also invest in the community’s future by backing long-term projects like the Khanda Clinic. By building up local medical infrastructure, we are helping ensure families have access to the care they deserve for years to come.
