Why Malawi

“...the world’s poorest peaceful country”
—The Economist, Sept. 2022

The Problem

“The Warm Heart of Africa” is also one of the poorest countries in the world

Malawi is consistently identified as one of the poorest countries in the world. While facing significant economic challenges, it has avoided the severe conflict and violence seen in other low-GDP countries.

Its resilient people suffer from a form of extreme poverty not seen anywhere in the U.S. The statistics are staggering and difficult to fathom. Many families, especially in our rural partner villages, eat only what food they are able to grow. With local government unable to provide any form of safety net, many Malawians live on a knife’s edge, with one bad harvest, one illness, or one accident often making the difference between life and death.

Behind the Statistics Are Real People

Though there are many formulas that seek to measure it, extreme poverty is not something that can be fully explained with numbers; it is far more visceral than that.

When a mother helplessly watches her child suffer a disease that was eradicated in wealthier countries centuries ago, or a father has to decide between sending his children to school or giving them dinner, we must ask how we can come alongside to help. Extreme poverty does breed despair, but we insist it is not hopeless.
