The Power of a Diagnosis – by Shawna Whitford
Shawna Whitford recently traveled to Malawi, Africa, with VIP on a Medical Trip. Hear about her experience providing critical healthcare to people in need.
One of the challenges of medical mission trips is that we often don’t get to see the long-term outcomes of the patients we care for. We diagnose, treat, and refer, always hoping that follow-up care is accessible and effective. But sometimes, we are blessed with a reminder of the impact we’ve made.

On our most recent trip, a woman walked to the clinic, not because she was sick, but because she wanted to thank us. After visiting multiple clinics without answers, she finally received a diagnosis from our team that led to the right treatment. Previously paralyzed on one side of her body, she had now regained full motion. She didn’t just walk to the clinic, she danced to show us that she could move freely again, completely independent.
Her journey back to the clinic, simply to express her gratitude, was deeply moving. It was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do, because sometimes, a single diagnosis can change a life.
