Empowered to Thrive: Partnership in Malawi-By Kathy Shearer
Kathy Shearer reflects on returning to Malawi for a second time. Bringing her daughter, Anna, made the journey even more special.
The Power of Partnership
To me, our partnership in Malawi through the VIP family and team alongside local communities is the true definition of a real partnership. VIP offers incredible initiatives for local communities. Malawians actively participate in building better lives and moving step-by-step out of poverty. VIP paired Anna and I with a Malawian sister. Because of this, we had the chance to see firsthand how hard these women work every day.

Resourcefulness in Action
How intelligent, resourceful, and loving these women are deeply struck me. They use the tools and opportunities VIP provides to start creative businesses. As a result, they generate sustainable income for their families. In fact, the sister VIP paired me with during my first visit in 2023 now runs her own successful rice business!
Julianna’s Story of Strength
On this summer’s trip, VIP paired me with Julianna. After tragically losing her husband, grief left Julianna devastated. However, the strength and resilience she showed every single day was remarkable. She recognized her new role as head of the family, picked herself up through the sorrow, and dedicated herself to caring for her grandchildren.

Julianna isn’t just surviving—she is truly thriving. Her strength shines in her 11-year-old granddaughter. She jumps in to help with chores without being prompted, learning directly from Julianna’s inspiring example. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Julianna as she continues to grow.

A Lasting Legacy of Joy and Gratitude
Both of my journeys to Malawi have deeply changed my perspective on life. The joy of the Malawian people is truly infectious. Because of this, Anna and I are both forever bonded with our Malawian sisters. Their daily joy, resilience, and hard work reshape what you hold important in life. “I feel so blessed for these experiences, and I am deeply grateful for this partnership in Malawi and all that VIP does to help transform poverty into sustainability.
“The women are so joyous. It’s infectious!” Come visit Malawi.
